Today we have a truly passionate merman, Merman X is an Italian Roman merman in love with the sea, and… with another merfolk. Since he was a child he has always dreamed with wearing tails and swimming like dolphins and mermen….
Now he has grown-up, make his dream of swimming like a merman true, but he has also developed amazing artistical skills related with… guess what?, exactly… mermaids and anything related with The little mermaid… Some of MermanX drawings are included in the article.

What does mermaiding represent to you?
I have always loved water since I was a child. Certainly, the Disney animated film “La sirenetta” (The little mermaid) has had a great positive influence for me in many ways, but the sea has always been, for me, the symbol of summer and the reunited family.
The sea was in the stories of my parents, the place where at the age of 14 they met and fell in love for the first time … I am a romantic.
I learned to swim as a child, I was an obese child and I needed sports, so since the 7 years I practice swimming regularly, learning technic and improving my capacity.
To date swimming has become a moment of my own, where I break from the frenzy of everyday life, I like to listen to the long silence under the seawater.
I spent the rest of my day, working in a shop, dedicated to my family, my cats, the house and watching movies and listen to music, which I really love.
For years, I dreamed about having a mermaid tail, I always wondered how Ariel could refuse hers! Ahaha.
Three years ago for first time I was able to wear a tail and swim. I felt I was destined to be a merman. It is perhaps the most intimate and real identity of me. For me becoming a triton is living in one of those many worlds that I dream of, when drawing.
How is mermaid community health Italy your sea of origin?
Here in Italy I met many people with my same passion, thanks to the internet we met and sometimes we meet to swim together. Unfortunately, in Italy for this type of things it is always very difficult to organize important events. But sometimes we have had the opportunity to do something really special.
We newts are not many, but here we are! (unfortunately it is not easy to declare yourself a merman).
I think that if we were given more chances by the company to organize important events and meetings, the community of mermaids and tritons, for people it could be a really fun and educational experience:
Educate to swimming, the environment, the observation of biodiversity and respect for sea creatures.
How do you experience the adventure of being a couple of mermen?
We have always been newts inside. We met around 2006 through my online forum on “the Disney mermaid”, so we always shared the passion of the sea and mermaids, but at that time it was impossible to think of being able to swim with a fish tail one day.
We fell in love in 2012 and together we have always expressed the desire one day to become true newts. When we had the chance we became together. This gave me a lot of courage, maybe I would have been more afraid of transforming myself. Doing it together gave me more confidence and strength to face humans and come out into the open to be completely myself.
Do you support any ocean conservation efforts?
Absolutely yes, I am a lover of nature and in my own small way I try to make my contribution. Even if these are difficult times we must not be discouraged. As never before the world needs awareness.
I have recently taken part in shots for the “Creature of the Sea” association that is fighting for the preservation and defense of the marine ecosystem and its biodiversity in our seas. We had a lot of feedback and many people shared these images, where we denounce the abuse and danger of plastic.
Note: “Creature del mare” was established on 10/15/2015 for the Protection of the marine ecosystem and its biodiversity. They focus their activity in cognitive investigation of the coasts and beaches of the Lazio coast and of other Italian regions through direct visits from the mainland and the sea. Reporting to the competent Authorities of degraded and / or polluted areas; and animals in difficulty.
They do a great effort on environmental education projects at schools with the aim of educating about respect for the sea and the enhancement of maritime landscapes and other environmental ecosystems. Promoting the culture of the sea through sustainable sea activities.
What is your favorite mermaiding item or clothing?
For me mermaid tails I entrusted myself to producers, I cannot do it by myself.
The fin I use as Merman x is a fantasy fabric model produced by Mertailor. I have always desired to have one of their tails, when I was a young boy I used to see their work on the internet, but at that time it was impossible to own one for me. Today I am comfortable with his creations and I love wearing them.
In addition to the tail I hardly wear other accessories. I love simplicity. Half man, half fish … and the sea.
Italian artist? If I am not wrong you are a cartoonist and an animator, could you talk us about your other passions and hobbies?
After high school, I studied to become 2D Animator. Animation and drawing are also passions born from my muse “the Disney mermaid”. I also have a tattoo of Ariel, from one of her sketches made by Glean Keane (the animator par excellence).
Once I finish my studies I tried to pursue this career, but in Italy it is really tough. A year ago I decided to leave this dream in the drawer and keep it as a hobby. Some of my works can be viewed on my page (which I update a little):

I have many hobbies, I obviously love music, musicals, dubbing, directing … I’m not good at everything and I’ve never completely studied it to learn all this, but some of these hobbies I cultivate as a self-taught person for fun.
Italian Interview
Cominciamo dall’inizio come sei entrato in acqua … cosa hai attratto inizialmente, un film, un amico, il mare …? Cosa significa essere un tritone nella tua vita?
Ho sempre amato l’acqua sin da bambino. Certamente il film d’animazione Disney “La sirenetta”ha avuto un’influenza positiva per me sotto tanti punti di vista.
Ma il mare è sempre stato il simbolo dell’estate e della famiglia riunita.
Il mare era nei racconti dei miei genitori, il posto dove a 14 anni si sono incontrati e innamorati per la prima volta… Sono un romantico.
Ho imparato a nuotare da piccolo, ero un bambino obeso e avevo bisogno di sport. Per 7 anni ho praticato nuoto, imparando molto.
Ad oggi il nuotare è diventato un momento tutto mio, dove stacco dalla frenesia di tutti i giorni, mi piace ascoltare il lungo silenzio sotto l’acqua del mare.
Nel resto del mio tempo, lavoro in un negozio, mi dedico alla mia famiglia, ai miei gatti , alla casa e guardo film e ascolto musica. >
Per anni ho sognato di avere una coda da sirena,(mi sono sempre chiesto come potesse Ariel non volerla! Ahaha), quando 3 anni fa per la prima volta mi è stato possibile indossarla e nuotarci, ho sentito che ero destinato ad essere un tritone. È l’identità forse piu intima e reale di me.
Per me diventare un tritone è vivere in uno di quei tanti mondi che sogno.
Com’è la comunità delle sirene e tritoni nel tuo mare di origine?
Qui in Italia ho conosciuto molte persone con la mia stessa passione, grazie ad internet ci siamo conosciuti e qualche volta incontrati. Purtroppo in Italia per questo tipo di cose è sempre molto difficile organizzare eventi di rilievo. Ma qualche volta abbiamo avuto occasione di fare qualcosa di davvero speciale.
Noi tritoni non siamo molti, ma ci siamo! (purtroppo non è facile
dichiararsi un tritone).
Io penso che se ci venisse data piu possibilità da parte della società di
organizzare eventi e riunioni importanti, la comunità delle sirene e dei
tritoni ,per le persone possa essere davvero una bella esperienza divertente e
formativa:
Educare al nuoto, all’ambiente, all’osservazione della biodiversità e al rispetto
delle creature del mare.
Come vivi l’avventura di essere un tritone in coppia?
Siamo sempre stati tritoni dentro. Ci siamo conosciuti circa nel 2006 tramite il mio forum on line a tema “la sirenetta Disney”, abbiamo dunque sempre condiviso la passione del mare e delle sirene, ma a quel tempo era impossibile pensare di poter un giorno nuotare con una coda da pesce.
Ci siamo innamorati nel 2012 e insieme abbiamo sempre espresso il desiderio un giorno di diventare veri tritoni. Quando abbiamo avuto la possibilità lo siamo diventati insieme. Questo mi ha dato molto coraggio, forse da solo avrei avuto piu timore a trasformarmi. Il farlo insieme mi ha dato piu sicurezza e forza di affrontare gli umani e uscire allo scoperto per essere completamente me stesso.
Sostieni eventuali sforzi di conservazione degli oceani?
Assolutamente si, io sono amante della natura e nel mio piccolo cerco di dare il mio contributo. Anche se questi sono tempi difficili non ci dobbiamo far scoraggiare. Come non mai il mondo ora ha bisogno di consapevolezza.
Ho partecipato ultimamente a dei scatti per l’associazione “Creature del mare” che si batte per la salvaguardia e difesa dell’ecosistema marino e della sua biodiversità dei nostri mari. Abbiamo avuto parecchio riscontro e in molti hanno condiviso queste immagini, dove denunciamo l’abuso e la pericolosità della plastica.
Note: “Creature del mare” L’Associazione istituita il 15/10/2015 svolge le seguenti attività: Tutela dell’ecosistema marino e della sua biodiversità Indagine conoscitiva della situazione di coste e spiagge del litorale laziale e di altre regioni italiane mediante visite dirette dalla terraferma e dal mare. Segnalazione alle competenti Autorità di zone degradate e/o inquinate; e animali in difficoltà Progetti di educazione ambientale presso scuole allo scopo di educare al rispetto del mare ed alla valorizzazione dei paesaggi marittimi e degli altri ecosistemi ambientali
Qual è il tuo oggetto o abbigliamento tritone preferito?
Per le mie code da sirena mi sono affidato a dei produttori, da solo non sono in grado di farne.
La pinna che utilizzo è un modello fantasea in tessuto prodotta da Mertailor. Ho sempre aspirato ad averne una sua. Da ragazzo vedevo su internet i suoi lavori, ma a quel tempo era impossibile possederne una per me. Ad oggi sono a mio agio con le sue creazioni e adoro indossarla.
Oltre alla coda difficilmente indosso altri accessori. Amo la semplicità. Mezzo uomo, mezzo pesce…. e il mare. :)>
Artista italiano? Se non sono informato male sei un vignettista e un animatore, potresti parlare di questa e di altre passioni ed hobby?
Dopo le scuola superiore , ho studiato per poter imparare il mestiere di Animatore 2D, un’altra passione quella dell’animazione e del disegno nata sempre dalla mia musa “la sirenetta Disney”. Posseggo infatti anche un tatuaggio di Ariel, uno dei bozzetti di lei realizzato da Glean Keane (l’animatore per eccellenza).
Dopo aver finito i studi ho tentato di intraprendere questa carriera, ma in Italia è davvero dura. Un anno fa ho deciso di lasciare nel cassetto questo sogno e tenerlo come hobby. Alcuni miei lavori sono visionabili sulla mia pagina(che aggiorno poco):

Di hobby ne ho tanti, amo ovviamente la musica, i musical, il doppiaggio, la regia… Non sono bravo in tutto e non ho mai studiato completamente per imparare tutto questo, ma alcuni di questi hobby li coltivo da autodidatta per puro divertimento.
