Where Do Mermaids Come From?
Mermaids are, quite simply, half-human and half-fish. They are legendary sea creatures that pre-date written history itself. In fact, cave paintings from the Stone Age depict mermaids in drawings as many as 30,000 years old. That’s right, sirens date all the way back to the Paleolithic period when cavemen walked the earth.
All legends of this mythological creatures describe them quite similarly, with one common shared characteristic being their mesmerizing voices. In fact, the aboriginal people of Australia have a different name for mermaids: yawkyawks. Historians think that name relates to the songs they’re said to sing in many tales of folklore. These songs are known for captivating sailors.
What makes them so interesting, even in today’s studies, is that they are present in the collective unconscious of nearly every seafaring folk to date. With paintings and stories thousands of years old, historians say we may have believed in mermaids since the dawn of our species itself.
Mermaids have also made it into plenty of works. From ancient Greece, where Homer wrote about them in The Odyssey, to modern day pieces. We all know of The Little Mermaid and other movie adaptions of famous stories and tales, as well, and it all begs the question: If everyone seems to be familiar with them, why has no evidence ever been found of their existence? That’s a question perhaps best left to philosophers and historians.
What we do know is that we love mermaids, and the image of a mermaid is certainly one worth saving, celebrating, and appreciating in today’s world.
Why We Love Mermaids
In most stories, mermaids represent passion and beauty. Oftentimes, the stories center around learning to love oneself for who they truly are and finding out that being different isn’t so bad after all. In fact, most fairytales and stories centered around mermaids emphasize how great being unique truly is.
So, with those things in mind, it’s no surprise that girls and boys alike continue to appreciate mermaids and their image–often far into their teen years and beyond. With hits like H20, a Disney television series that ran in the early 2000s, featuring teen mermaids, many young adults continue wanting to act out their dreams of being a mermaid.
Become a Mermaid
If you’ve ever heard the saying “walk a mile in their shoes,” how about trying to swim a mile in their tail in order to better understand the mystery and lure behind the stories of mermaids? There has been such a love for mermaids that you actually can by purchasing a mermaid tail set.
Such a set comes with a monofin, into which both feet slide. The monofin is held securely to the feet with elasticized bands around the ankles, and a cloth tail is slipped over the rubber fin, covering all the way up to the waist–just like a mermaid’s real tail. The visual effect is stunning and could even fool a fisherman, if you dare to try.
These mermaid costumes may take a little work to get used to swimming in, but they are bunches of fun once you get the hang of it. Suddenly, girls and boys of any age can live out their dreams of being a mermaid as they learn the dolphin kick and dive under water for colorful new adventures.
If you need inspiration, just think about all of the literature and films related to mermaids from throughout time.
Inspiration for Your Mermaid Adventures
Any mermaid lover has likely seen all the new movies and shows related to mermaids. Some focus on the beauty and femininity of them, like Aquamarine and Scales.
However, others have delved deeper into the ancient tales that focus on the more sinistry nature that surrounds some mermaid legends, like Charlotte’s Song or the television series Siren.
Gift Ideas for Mermaid Lovers
Aside from a gift set with a monofin and tail, you can also offer a mermaid lover a one-of-a-kind experience–like tickets to a professional mermaid show. That’s right: with the love of mermaids in today’s society, many marine parks and entertainment venues have begun featuring mermaids in water-based acts.
“Professional mermaids” show off their talents in synchronized shows and beautiful choreographed acts to demonstrate the beauty and grace that we have come to associate with mermaids and their gorgeous tails.
Above all, if you know someone who loves mermaids, why not just support their passion? No matter how you choose to do it, keeping the spirit of mermaids alive can go a long way in helping people, and especially young adults, feel comfortable in their own skin.
